This week was a mixed bag but it’s about ticking things off and getting there.
Feeling a bit tired but planned a bit easier this week
..

Sunday – A somewhat nice day and a long road ride with a variety of intervals on hills.
Ended up doing about 5.5hrs and 3,000m climbing and average watts 255. The ride is on Strava.
Tired after this though!

Monday – back to work and an interesting day – no bike.
Did a blood donation at the Irish Blood Transfusion Service in Olier St. I’d do this in the winter, but it is said that you recover in about 3 weeks, and then actually have a small benefit from this. Given that they’d text’d me saying A+ stocks were recently low, it’s a win-win – the kind I like.
Matteo went into Humphries Cycles in Dublin and picked up a caché of High 5 Products – High 5 is great as it is a) readily available b) not expensive c) covers all your needs d) easy to digest and e) stringently screened and tested for banned substances.

Tues – Tired from that and took it easy training. 2hrs on the turbo in the shed on the TT bike. With just 4x10’ intervals at tempo pace. Also getting going with the Hypoxic Generator Training and thanks to Aidan Reade and Black Rose. Funny story is I thought one of the dials was to turn up the airflow so I was turning it up as high as it could go; turns out it was the simulated altitude!

Wed – Really tired today, and went to the gym for the some light strength work and easy on the turbo – hot bath in the evening.

Thurs – Feeling a bit better and getting the hang of using the hypoxic generator. Turbo in the shed again and using the generator correctly now.

Friday – rest day and driving in from 7am to meet Paul Doyle at 8am in Sandyford to get new
extensions for my aerobars.
We’ve been just trying to get everything perfect and the CFD (computational fluid dynamics) design custom skinsuit by Aerocoach and Nopinz is coming down to the wire. Dr. Xavier Disley emailed in the details and released these simulative images of virtual me—check them out. The blue represents areas of low pressure. A few more watts saved. For me a custom skinsuit is great as standard sizes don’t fit me.

Saturday – a small shim to raise my elbows and tilt the pads fitted to my aerobars. A local guy Joe Stapleton in Wicklow Town made them for me as a favour—thanks Joe! Now to get the longer bolts.
Still a number of aspects to finalize including spares of everything, tools, etc.
David McQuaid of DMC sports is providing me with a special Aerodynamic Track Crankset, the Miche Pista Aero; gotta get that fit.
Many thanks to Hugh Byrne, Martyn Irvine and Brian Nugent just going over pacing and riding the lines on the track – more on this later.

Then that afternoon into Sundrive Road -2.5 hrs on the track; 2x8’ to warm up, then 3x12’ at about or just above race pace in terms of watts (adjusted up for sea level and a bit down for the blood donation).
A few speedy efforts and then one 18’ effort at about 20w below race pace. Just doing
long efforts by myself at the pace I’d reckon I need adjusted for altitude. It’s a question of what reduction I’d have from the donation, so they shouldn’t be too far off.
